Metrohm Combustion Ion Chromatography for PFAS AOF screening

PFAS Screening, AOF & Combustion Ion Chromatography

Combustion Ion Chromatography extends environmental ion analysis to organofluorine and organically bound halogen screening. For PFAS-related monitoring, adsorbable organic fluorine (AOF) can be determined as a non-targeted sum parameter using adsorption, combustion and subsequent fluoride determination by ion chromatography.

Metrohm documents AOF analysis in aqueous matrices according to U.S. EPA Method 1621. The same CIC platform can also support AOX and related halogen/sulfur applications.

AOF is a screening / sum-parameter approach. It does not identify individual PFAS compounds; targeted identification and quantification of individual PFAS normally requires dedicated techniques such as LC-MS/MS.

Environmental Methods Supported by the Analytical Techniques

Environmental methods are technique- and matrix-specific. The examples below show where ion chromatography and related workflows appear in established EPA methods.

EPA Method 300.0 — Inorganic Anions by Ion Chromatography

Applicable matrices include drinking water, surface water, groundwater, mixed domestic and industrial wastewater, reagent water and selected extracts/leachates.

SW-846 Method 9056A — Inorganic Anions by IC

Sequential determination of chloride, fluoride, bromide, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and sulfate in aqueous samples including wastewater and aqueous extracts of solids.

SW-846 Method 9057 — Emission Sampling Solutions

Determination of chloride from HCl / Cl₂ emission sampling trains by anion chromatography.

U.S. EPA Method 1621 — AOF / PFAS Screening

Non-targeted screening of organofluorine in aqueous matrices using adsorption, combustion and ion-chromatographic fluorine determination.

Method suitability must be checked against the exact current standard, sample matrix, detection requirement, sample-preparation instructions and quality-control requirements. Instrument availability alone does not establish method compliance.

Environmental Analysis FAQs

Common questions about environmental ion chromatography, sample preparation, PFAS screening, trace metals, air monitoring and laboratory setup.

What environmental applications can CWTC support?
CWTC can support analytical and sample-preparation workflows for water, wastewater, air quality, emissions, soil, sediment, pesticide and contaminant research, trace metals, PFAS screening and general environmental laboratory requirements.
Which technique is used to measure inorganic anions in water and wastewater?
Ion chromatography is widely used to separate and quantify anions such as chloride, fluoride, bromide, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and sulfate. It is used in standardized environmental methods including EPA Method 300.0 and SW-846 Method 9056A.
Can Metrohm ion chromatography be used for EPA environmental methods?
Metrohm IC systems are used for analytical techniques referenced by several EPA methods. The laboratory must still configure and validate the complete method according to the exact current method requirements, including column, detector, calibration, quality control and sample preparation.
Can ion chromatography be used for glyphosate analysis?
Yes, Metrohm demonstrates glyphosate and AMPA analysis using ion chromatography with suitable detection. This should be treated as a specific analytical approach rather than being described as EPA Method 547, which uses a different analytical workflow.
How can trace heavy metals be measured in environmental water samples?
Voltammetry can provide sensitive determination of selected trace metals in water and other environmental matrices. The applicable analytes and preparation depend on the sample, concentration range and required method.
What is AOF and how is it related to PFAS?
AOF, or adsorbable organic fluorine, is a non-targeted sum parameter used to estimate the overall organofluorine burden in an aqueous sample. Metrohm applies combustion ion chromatography to AOF determination for PFAS screening workflows including U.S. EPA Method 1621.
Does Combustion IC identify individual PFAS compounds?
No. AOF by combustion IC is a screening and sum-parameter approach. Individual PFAS compounds normally require targeted analytical methods such as LC-MS/MS when compound-specific identification and quantification are required.
How is ion chromatography used in air-quality research?
Airborne particles or aerosols can be collected on filters or converted into liquid samples using suitable sampling systems such as PILS. The resulting extracts or liquid streams can then be analyzed by ion chromatography for water-soluble inorganic ions. MARGA provides online monitoring of water-soluble inorganic gases and aerosols.
Which equipment is useful for pesticide and persistent organic pollutant sample preparation?
Environmental workflows may use SpeedExtractor or UniversalExtractor for solvent extraction, followed by SyncorePlus, Multivapor or Rotavapor for evaporation and concentration prior to GC, HPLC or mass-spectrometric analysis.
What equipment is useful for soil and sediment environmental research?
Depending on the target analyte, soil and sediment workflows may require drying or freeze drying, solvent extraction, extract concentration, aqueous extraction, ion chromatography, voltammetry or other downstream analytical techniques.
Can CWTC support university environmental science and research departments?
Yes. CWTC can help research groups select flexible analytical and sample-preparation platforms for environmental chemistry, water and wastewater research, air-quality studies, soil science, contaminant analysis and postgraduate method development.
Can CWTC provide general laboratory equipment alongside environmental analyzers?
Yes. Supporting laboratory equipment can include ELGA laboratory water purification, JULABO temperature control, IWAKI laboratory glassware, pH and conductivity measurement and other laboratory infrastructure required around the analytical workflow.
